Heather K. Whittington, M.A. sits in the window seat of her Bentz Street Studio

Heather became a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner in 2003, and now serves as a mentor for Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Pracitioners-in-Training. She received her first Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session during a yoga retreat at Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and said “This is what I want to do with my life!” The blend of classical yoga with modern psychology found in PRYT supports Heather’s personal mission of “empowering people to feel fully alive,” while nurturing her own well being and spirit.

She has participated in professional development workshops with Patricia Walden, Stephen Cope, Sudhir Jonathan Foust, and Bessel van der Kolk’s “Frontiers of Trauma Treatment” at Kripalu Center, which provides scientific insight into how yoga can help people suffering from PTSD.

Heather is a member of the American Association of Suicidology, the Association of Death Educators and Counselors. She presented a poster on her observations of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Grief Support Groups at the 2009 ADEC Conference.

She facilitated yoga experientials by the Center for Eating Disorders at Shepherd Pratt during the 2008 National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and has transformed the boardrooms of many prestigious corporations with her stress management workshops, including BP Solar and NBC. Most recently she lead two yoga-based grief workshops for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Annual Survivors Conference in Chicago. Heather was a 2003 recipient of the Entrepreneur of the Year award for Frederick County, Maryland.

Heather holds a Masters of Thanatology degree from Hood CollegeĀ  in Thanatology, the study of Death and Dying. Her focus is on helping the bereaved stay healthy and increase immune functioning through mindfulness based practices, relaxation and expressive arts.
